Fun things happen when people get together to make things . . .
When I returned home to Singapore, after a very successful summer in the studio, I was a bit depressed. I was thankful to jump right into things, so there wasn't much time for me to sit around thinking, woe is me.
Three major art projects needed to come together before the end of September, my last year of teaching in Singapore was starting, and my good friends over at Fictive Fingers invited me to teach a workshop at their studio. Busy, busy, busy! (Just the way I like things!)
Fictive Fingers is an "independent hand-printed textile design house by sisters Hani Dalduri and Aisah Dalduri in Singapore."
In an effort to keep community present in their daily art making, they run workshops out of their studio. Most of the workshops they teach themselves, sharing their techniques and the process behind their wildly successful brand. But occassionally, they invite other folks into the studio to teach and share.
On August 9th, they hosted a creative retreat. Half of the retreat was dedicated to learning about shibori. And the other half was my banner making workshop. And let me tell you, folks: it was like a color explosion up in there!
I had example banners hanging up and I drew out a variety of possible banner shapes, but there was really no need! This team of creatives jumped right into the process . . . And made some extremely vibrant and exciting pieces!
We had baskets of felt in the middle of the table--one of which we just dumped out to rifle through. There were jars and jars of colorful thread, and enough fabric scissors to go around. Never a dull moment!
One of my favorites from the bunch, above: Artsy Tartsy. Love it!!
Everyone was laughing and chatting and learning from each other. It was magical! I can't wait to teach another banner making workshop again soon!
In the meantime, there are three (3!!!) new workshops that I am teaching over at Fictive Fingers (462 Crawford Lane). Perhaps you will join in on the fun?
